Bursting a VC funding myth
By NEOinc on Nov 2, 2007 in Funding
If you can get past the name of this blog, Sacred Cow Dung, you’ll find a great site with loads of actionable information from the VC point of view.
I just came across this blog and was intrigued by a statement in a recent post:
“In the investment community the reality is that there is more capital available than there are compelling business opportunities in which to invest. Any venture will be compelling and fundable if it offers relief to a well defined customer pain which will generate revenue when executed by a highly motivated team of entrepreneurs possessing a sustainable advantage.”
So why is it so hard to find funding? The author goes on to propose:
“The fundamental reason that only 2% of start-up business can attract professional investment is that the majority of entrepreneurs don’t understand how to properly structure a business or understand the investment process.”
I suppose asserting that there is more capital available than compelling business opportunities is easier to support in New York where this author is based, versus Northeast Ohio, but the rest of the article does a great job of providing the VC’s point of view on the funding issue, along with six fundamental rules supposedly in every VC’s bible.
The post goes on to lay out four elements of a “Grand Strategy” approach - a bit philosophical, but good advice nonetheless. Wrapping up this article is a list of what the author calls the DNA of your organization; those elements that will help you respond effectively to the inevitable changes and obstacles you will encounter. Guess what? It’s a great list of the basics of business planning that NEOinc helps all our clients with day in and day out:
